I shall try to demonstrate the wisdom of the empress. She placed the institute outside the city to keep the girls from the world until fully developed reason and moral principles deeply rooted in their hearts would be able to protect them from bad examples. Like many others, I was endowed by nature with good inclinations but their sound development was solely the result of education. Nothing can be firm in high society, customs everywhere prevail over rules. One meets there only monkeys and parrots, but you will not find original characters that make one person different from another in the same way their faces do not look alike. However, the girls educated in our institute stand out from this uniformity, each one had a character of her own. Their originality, so often mocked by many, had a very good side. They made excellent wives. They had to struggle against existing prejudices about their education, which they met even in their own families, and against general ill will. In most cases, they were acting honestly and defended their principles. Very few deviated from the direction given to them. (Rzhevskaia 1871, 5–6)
